What Do Frogs Eat

The question of “what do frogs eat” is almost always asked when an individual decided to buy a frog from a pet supply store.  The answer is actually quite easy, although it may make some people ask themselves the question, do I really want to do this?

So what do frogs eat?  The reason people question if they want to do it is mainly due to the fact that frogs only eat moving food.   In other words, it has to be alive.  Many may feel a bit squeamish at the thought of hunting live flies, moths, crickets and smaller frogs to feed their new pet.  To ensure the survival of the creature, it is a necessary step.

Several types of frogs are available to be purchased and kept as pets.  Fortunately, they all seem to have pretty similar diets.   Generally speaking, the smaller the frog, the smaller the prey they seek.  The owner of the store must be feeding the frogs while waiting for them to be sold, so when you decide on the type of frog you want to buy, simply ask the owner, “What do frogs eat?”

If you obtain your frog directly from the wild while camping, walking or just stumbling upon it one day, you will want to find the answer to the question what do frogs eat pretty quickly.  Typically, frogs when caught will be reluctant to eat for a while; understandably, because it is unfamiliar with its new surroundings.  When in doubt, it is usually safest to begin with crickets if you are unsure of and need to know what do frogs eat.

If you cannot find crickets, continue capturing different types of insects and introducing them to your new pet frog.  Unfortunately, it does no good to ask your pet what do frogs eat, so you will need to try out different insects; offering a smorgasbord of bugs until you hit upon the ones in which your frog shows interest.  Even garden pests such as aphids, though detested by rose bush owners, may be coveted treats for a frog in captivity.  The insects would be set loose within the frog’s enclosed habitat, where they will fly or hop around acting naturally.  You will know if your frog is eating simply by the continual disappearance of the live food.

Still not sure you are up to bug hunting to feed your frog?  There are other options, although it will be up to your particular frog to decide what do frogs eat in his world.  Fish flakes, easily obtained at most pet supply and department stores might be enjoyed by some frogs.  Certain pet stores also offer containerized insects for this purpose.

Whether you purchase or capture a frog to keep as a pet, you will need to ask what do frogs eat.  Once you hit on the right combination, you and your frog will enjoy several years of companionship together.
